What's on my easel

I have started a new Pastel Painting of a very cute Giraffe. I took this photo last year on one of my many visits to Australia Zoo. I was just lucky enough that some tourists had paid to feed the Giraffes so I managed to get right up close to them. Sometimes it pays to just loiter around haha.

I finally finished the Cassowary I was working on for 'The Holmes Prize for Realistic Australian Bird Art' (god thats a mouthful), so fingers crossed it will get a look in.

I wasn't so lucky with my Lion Cub. I missed out on getting accepted into 2 different shows with that one. Oh well each to their own I suppose, obviously the selection judges weren't into wildlife art too much. I think they like a lot more creativity in the painting/drawing, so that is definitely something I need to work on this year.

So back to the Giraffe...

Instead of drawing this one in many different pastel types, I am going to complete it using stabilo-carbothello pastel pencils entirely. I always find it a bit difficult to get a good clean edge with these but i'll just have to persevere.

I'm using Canson Mi-Teintes Pastel Card in Sand colour as the drawing surface and I am going to leave the background this colour because I like the look of just the Giraffe head with no background. It seems to pop. Make sure to shoot me a message if you have any questions.

Till next week, Kerri xx
