Goal Setting for Artists

Goal setting for an artist looks different than it does for other professionals.

What does goal setting look like for an Artist?

Goal setting for an artist looks different than it does for other professionals. It's important to

not only set goals related to your art - such as completing a piece or entering an art show - but also goals that help you stay organized and motivated.

This could include things like setting aside a certain amount of time each week to work on your art, creating a budget to manage money related to art supplies and materials, or creating a timeline to keep track of important dates related to your work.

It's also important to set goals that help an artist stay connected to their creative process, such as trying a new technique or reading a book related to your art.

Ultimately, goal setting for an artist should be tailored to your individual needs and goals. So I think the first thing you need to work out if you are creating art this year for yourself or to make money from it.

I've listed below a few ideas of goals you may want to set for yourself:

  • What art competitions would I like to enter?
  • How many paintings a month would I like to finish?
  • How many hours a week will I set aside to paint?
  • Social Media Goals - Do I want to start a social media account? How many followers would I like to gain over the next year? How often will I post?
  • Painting a Collection - Do I have a subject I want to explore with my art? Can I create a collection of work from this subject? Do I want to show this collection publicly?
  • Art Exhibition - Do I want to show my work in a gallery? Do I know what galleries or art societies are local to me? What galleries will I approach to display my work?
  • Selling Goals - Will I have a market stall to sell my work? Will I produce merchandise from my work? Do I want to create digital products? Do I want to add my designs to an online marketplace such as Society 6 or RedBubble? Do I want to sell commissions and how
many a month would I want to create?
  • Friend - Do I want to create portraits for friends and as presents?
  • Education - At what stage in the Creative Barn do you want to be at in 6 months?
  • Special Treat - What is your dream art supply you'd like to buy? Do you want to attend an art retreat? Would you love your own amazing art studio?

The list can go on and on, so maybe sit down and write out others that you can think of or add more questions to the ones I've listed above. Each goal above can easily be broken down into more. But don't overwhelm yourself. I want you to maybe pick just one or two areas and set maybe one or two goals that are achievable this year.
Break those goals down into small steps. Make sure each step won't take more than an hour to achieve. If they do, then you need to break them down even more.

Make sure you tick off each small step along the way to your bigger goal. This gives us a sense of achievement and keeps us motivated. You can achieve great things this year when you put your mind to it.
Good luck and enjoy the process!
