How to Package and Post your Art Safely

Learn how to safely package and post your art or prints with confidence—protect your work, impress your buyers, and ship like a pro.

How to Package and Post Your Art Safely

One of the most nerve-wracking parts of being an artist is sending your artwork off into the world. Whether it's a sold original, a commission, or a print, getting it from your studio to the buyer in perfect condition can feel stressful. But it doesn't have to be! With a few tried-and-true tips and a little planning, you can confidently package and post your art safely.

Why Packaging Matters

Think of your packaging as the protective armour for your art. Damaged corners, smudged surfaces, or broken glass can turn an exciting moment for your customer into a disappointing one. Good packaging not only protects your piece but also reflects your professionalism and care as an artist.

Supplies You’ll Need

Here are some common items that will make your packaging process easier:

  • Rigid mailers or mailing tubes (depending on your artwork)
  • Glassine paper (for protecting the surface)
  • Foam board or cardboard sheets
  • Bubble wrap
  • Packing tape
  • ‘Do Not Bend’ or ‘Fragile’ stickers
  • Plastic sleeves or cello bags for prints
  • Corner protectors

Optional: Branded stickers, thank-you cards, care instructions, or certificates of authenticity to include a special touch.

Packaging Flat Artwork (like drawings, prints, or pastel pieces)

  1. Protect the surface – Place a sheet of glassine over the artwork to prevent smudging.
  2. Add a backing board – Use a firm board like foam core or cardboard to keep the artwork flat.
  3. Slip it into a plastic sleeve – This adds an extra layer of protection from dust and moisture.
  4. Secure it with tape – Lightly tape the sleeve to the board to keep everything from shifting.
  5. Wrap in bubble wrap – Add a cushion of bubble wrap around the whole bundle.
  6. Place in a rigid mailer or box – Choose one that fits snugly to prevent movement.
  7. Label it clearly – Add ‘Do Not Bend’ and ‘Fragile’ stickers.

Packaging Rolled Artwork

Some larger works (like unframed canvases or large paper pieces) may be better sent rolled:

  1. Roll the artwork with glassine paper facing the artwork surface.
  2. Use a sturdy mailing tube with end caps.
  3. Pad the ends inside the tube to prevent the roll from shifting.
  4. Seal both ends with packing tape and label clearly.

Packaging Framed Art

  1. Tape foamboard or cardboard over glass to protect.
  2. Add corner protectors – You can buy them or make your own from cardboard.
  3. Wrap the entire piece in bubble wrap securely.
  4. Cut cardboard sheets or foam board to sandwich the artwork front and back.
  5. Use a sturdy box that’s just slightly larger than your piece.
  6. Fill any gaps with crumpled paper or bubble wrap so the artwork doesn’t move.

Extra Tips for Posting

  • Insure valuable shipments – Especially originals. Australia post insure for $100 but you can add insurance, its not too much more.
  • Get tracking for peace of mind.
  • Photograph your packaging process in case you need to make a claim.
  • Use a courier service if Australia Post feels too risky or expensive for certain items.
  • IAP is brilliant in Australia, they transport standing upright.
  • Don't forget to add all the little extras like a free gift to make your customer feel special and don't forget a business card or a way for them to share your contact details with friends.

Packaging Can Be Part of the Experience

Don’t forget – how your art arrives is part of your customer’s experience. A thoughtful unboxing moment with a handwritten note or a little bonus item can leave a lasting impression.

Final Thoughts

It might seem overwhelming at first, but once you get your system in place, packaging your artwork becomes second nature. With the right materials and a few helpful habits, you’ll feel much more confident sending your beautiful creations out into the world.

And remember: every piece you post is a reminder that someone loved your work enough to make it part of their home. That’s something worth celebrating!\
