Artists see the world differently

As an artist, do you notice you see things in more detail than your friends and family. Read on to understand why.

Artists

As an artist, do you notice that you see things in more detail than your friends and family. Do you look just that bit longer at a beautiful sky, or a crashing wave? I find myself looking at the details, seeing what colours make up that sunset or what direction that furs going on my dogs’ nose. Right down to the separate shapes that make up that flower.

This is exactly what I’m talking about when I say artists see the world differently to others. It’s because as a realist artist especially, we must look at the details and observe them before we can transfer that across to our canvas.

TIPS TO SEE LIKE AN ARTIST

1. If you feel you don’t know what I’m talking about, then you need to go and start sketching from nature more often. It’s a quick way to learn to see the details. Remember drawing is 50% observation.

2. When next looking at a sunset, try and see how many different colours are in it and imagine what colours you could mix to create the same.

3. Take a close look at your pet and figure out which way the fur is going and how long the strokes would need to be for you to get a true likeness.

4. If your lucky enough to own a black or white animal, really focus in on what colours you can actually see in their coat and how you would go about drawing it. It’s amazing how little black or white are in a black or white animal when you go to draw them, they are made up of many other colours reflected off the coat.

I think as artists we are great at slowing down and really appreciating the beauty that surrounds us. Which is an excellent way to be. These times we are in are all about fast paced, sitting inside and watching a screen. I think were pretty lucky to be able to get outside and really appreciate wildlife and nature.

So, I encourage you to just go for a walk outside, slow down and observe and just be inspired by your surroundings. There’s a never-ending supply of things to paint or draw if we look close enough.
