Do It Scared: Overcoming Fear in Your Art Journey

Fear is a natural emotion that once helped our ancestors stay alive, but in modern life, it often holds us back—especially when it comes to art. As artists, fear can prevent us from living fully and creating our best work. But there’s a way forward: do it scared.

Why Fear Holds Us Back

Fear can be paralyzing, but it's important to push past it. Growth only happens when you step outside your comfort zone. The key to building confidence as an artist isn't just learning new techniques—it’s about taking action even when you're scared. If you're afraid of something in your art, it means it matters to you, and that's exactly why you should face it head-on.

My Story of Fear

If I hadn’t pushed through my fear, I wouldn’t be living the life I love today. When I made the decision to move to a farm and focus on my art, I was scared out of my mind. When I was first asked to teach, I could have easily said no because the thought terrified me. But I said yes anyway, and that decision changed my life.

Another example is when a gallery owner suggested I switch mediums from pastel to oils or acrylics. His criticism hit hard, and I almost let it make me give up pastels. But I decided, "Screw that, I love pastels," and kept going. It’s a good reminder that you don’t need to please everyone—sometimes, you just need to stick to what you love.

Common Fears Artists Face

  1. Fear of Imperfection
Many artists stop themselves from starting or finishing a piece because they fear it won’t be perfect. But art is about growth, and you only grow by making mistakes. There are no bad paintings—just learning experiences.
  2. Fear of Criticism
Receiving negative feedback, especially from loved ones or professionals, can shake your confidence. But learning to take constructive criticism without letting it tear you down is key to growth. Not all criticism needs to be taken to heart—filter through what’s helpful and leave the rest behind.
  3. Fear of Comparison
Comparing your art to others can be stifling. Focus on your personal journey and improvement rather than worrying about how your work stacks up. Remember, you don’t know how much time or experience others have, so comparing yourself to them isn’t fair.
  4. Fear of Wasting Time or Resources
Many older artists worry about whether investing time and money in art is “worth it.” But art isn’t a waste—it’s an investment in yourself and your happiness. Allow yourself the freedom to enjoy the process without guilt.
  5. Fear of Being Too Old to Learn
You’re never too old to start something new. Whether you’re 50 or 75, learning and creating art is about the joy of the journey, not about becoming famous or perfect.
  6. Fear of Success
Fear of success can be just as real as fear of failure. Some artists worry that once they achieve success, they won’t be able to keep up with expectations. But success is part of the journey—each piece you create brings new challenges and opportunities to grow.
  7. Fear of Exposure
Many shy or introverted artists struggle with putting their work out there. Start small by entering local art shows or joining community art groups. The confidence you gain from seeing your work on display can help overcome this fear.
  8. Fear of Creative Block
Worrying about running out of ideas or losing inspiration can prevent artists from starting new projects. Surround yourself with creativity, visit galleries, or try a new medium to spark inspiration.

The Cycle of Fear and Confidence

Think of it like a wheel:

  • You’ve never done something before, so you feel scared.
  • You do it anyway, and it builds confidence.
  • The next time, you’re not as scared, and the wheel keeps turning.

Every time you push through fear, you get a little stronger and a little more confident. Eventually, that fear fades, but only if you keep doing the thing that scares you.

A Member’s Story: Growth Through Facing Fear

One of my members, Diane, shared an amazing story about how much she’s grown since joining The Creative Barn. Her journey really highlights how facing fear and building confidence go hand-in-hand:

“I never would have believed where joining The Creative Barn in September 2021 would lead me. I found my passion in Pastel, Charcoal, and Graphite under Kerri’s expert tutelage. She has guided me through the art-making process and encouraged me to challenge myself by creating merchandise—calendars and cards for family and friends, and by entering exhibitions and competitions. This weekend resulted in my first two painting sales—a fireworks-going-off-in-my-head moment. I am so grateful for Kerri’s clear, consistent, and supportive mode of teaching, which led me to this mind-blowing moment. What a fabulous feeling that someone actually wanted to pay money for my work. Thank you so much for your guidance and support, Kerri Dixon.”

Diane’s story is a perfect example of what happens when you push past fear and just go for it. The confidence that comes from those small wins builds over time, until you’re ready to take on bigger challenges.

Final Thoughts: Do It Scared

Acknowledge your fears, but don’t let them stop you. Instead, dismiss them and do it scared. Take that first step today, because as author Karen Lamb said, “A year from now, you may wish you had started today.”

Remember, the journey of art is about growth, and growth happens when we face what scares us most.
